How does a digital camera work?

A digital camera takes light and focuses it through the lens onto its image sensor. The sensor captures the light as small electrical charges, which the camera converts into digital form (a long string of 0s and 1s) and the final image is recorded onto a memory card. That’s all there is to it. Each digital picture is made up of very tiny individual elements called pixels. The more pixels your camera sensor has, the more detail will be in your final image. One particular type of digital camera is called a DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex). This camera has a mirror in front of the sensor which provides the image to the viewfinder. When you press the shutter, the mirror lifts up out of the way, allowing the image to be captured by the sensor.

Can digital cameras record video?

They sure can! In fact, modern digital cameras are great at it! Depending on the camera, you can record Full HD (1920 x 1080 pixels) or even Ultra HD (3840 x 2160 pixels). You need to carefully read through the specifications sheet of any camera you are looking at to find out what it can do video-wise. Many digital cameras record at a frame rate of 29.97 frames per second, which is fine for video. These cameras also record sound with the video through a built-in microphone. They also have an input for plugging in an external microphone if you want more professional-sounding audio.

Is it easy to transfer photos from a digital camera?

Very much so. There are three main ways to transfer photos from your digital camera: 1. Using a memory card. The memory card inside your camera typically records your photos in either JPEG or RAW format. You can remove the memory card and insert it into a card reader to transfer the image files to your computer. Many computers have a built-in card reader, or you can plug in an external reader. 2. You can transfer your image files directly into your computer from your camera using a cable connection. Typically the cable will be USB, but some cameras can also transfer using an HDMI cable. 3. Depending on the camera, you can also transfer your photos to your computer using a wireless connection, such as Bluetooth or Wi-Fi.
